8 . The chief industries of Aden are salt and cigarette manufacture. The
Italian firms of Messrs. Burgarella Ajola and Company have been doing a
very profitable business in salt manufacture at Shaikh Othman for many
vears. The Bombay firm of Messrs. Abdulabhoy and Joomabhoy Lalljee &
Co. have leased 906*92 acres of land for 30 years and are preparing the ground
for* the manufacture of salt. The salt manufactured by these firms is not
intended for local consumption, the monopoly of which is in the hands of
Government who have licensed certain salt pits to Arabs, who worked the
pits before the monopoly was purchased from the Abdali Sultan. About frds
0 f G ie/S e salt pits have passed into the hands of Messrs. Cowasjee Binshaw &
Brothers and Menahim Messa ; a proposal has dieen submitted to Govern
ment to place all producers of salt in Aden on the same footing. The cigarette
industry is carried on on a fairly large scale by foreign Jews and Greeks with
tobacco imported from Egypt. Other industries like house building, mat
making, oil-pressing and boat-building exist but on a small scale.
9 . No public works of importance were carried out during the year.

, spent Rs. 19,001 on Provincial major works, Rs. 18,944 on
Provincial minor works, Rs. 3,878 on Imperial major and Rs. 15,826 on
Imperial minor works.
10. Appendix XXV shows the number of registered and insured articles,
ordinary and value-’payable parcels posted and issued.
Post Offices. Inland money orders to the value of Rs. 6,18,984
were issued and fetched Rs. 5,560 as commission. The number of foreign
orders and British Postal Orders issued were to the exteut of Rs. 6,64,063 and
Rs. 1,07,727 respectively. Rs. 1,51,419 were deposited in the Savings Bank
against Rs. 1,67,893 in the previous year. The amount withdrawn was
Rs. 1,09,279 against Rs. 88,896 in 1908-09.
11. During the year there was no small-pox or plague or other epidemic
and consequently the general health of the Givi
Generai condition of the population in tlie Settlement was very good, the
economic condition of the people was. satisfactory.
Aden being a fortress, indigents and vagrants are excluded, being deporte
to their own countries after careful inquiries into their circumstances.
