ed for consumption into British territory and 72,947 maunds were exported
t0 the interior of Arabia The net revenue collected during the year amounted
to Rs. 14,9! 9 against Rs. 14,666 m 1908-09.
16. The quantity of salt exported by the Italian Salt Company decrease l
from 99,891 tons to 60,2591 tons and the quit-rent or royalty realised by the
Aden Settlement amounted to Ks. 30,129 against Rs. 49,945 in 1908-09. The
considerable decrease in the export of Aden salt is due, it is reported, to the
keen competition between the Liverpool, Aden, and Spanish producers. The
Spanish salt has been placed on the Indian market only within the past year
and it is this salt that caused the rapid fall in the export of Aden salt.
17. There were no offences detected under the Salt Law durin 0 * the year
under report.
18. Aden was declared a free port in 1850 and no customs duties are
levied except on liquors and intoxicating drugs. The
Customs. revenue from these sources is, however, credited to
the Excise head on the authority of paragraph II of Government Resolution,
Revenue Department, No. 2874 of the 17th April 1895.
19. By Government Resolution, Revenue Department, No. 3617, dated
the 6th April 1908, the Assistant Resident, and Collector of Abkari, Aden, is
appointed ex officio Collector of Customs for the purpose of enforcing the
prohibition against the importation into Aden of certain game trophies specified
in the schedule to the Government of India Notification in the Department
of Commerce and Industry, No. 4902-62, dated the 7th June 1907, as amended
by Notification No. 3596-54 of the 20th May 1909. Certain game trophies,
imported in spite of this prohibition, were confiscated and sold by auction.
The sale-proceeds amounting to Rs. 245 were credited to Government.
20. Eight licenses for the possession of 640,400 gallons of non-dangerous
petroleum, four licenses for the possession of 836
Petroleum. gallons of dangerous petroleum and three licenses
for the transport of 52,800 gallons of non-dangerous petroleum were issued
during the year and fetched in fees Rs. 1,894 against Rs. 3,274 in the preced
ing year.
21. 193 licenses were issued for the import,
Arms and ammunition. export etc. of arms, ammunition etc. against 148 in
the preceding year.
22. The following arms were imported into AdenOne shotgun, one

caps, 150 gross and 6 cwts. Fire crackers and 260 gross Bengal matches, etc.

Safety cartridges 7,092 and 1 qr. 14 lbs.
Rifles 210, carbines 6, sporting rifles 22, revolvers 6, pistols 3, maxim gun
equipment, 4 swords, 8 spears, 9 bayonets, 2 tons
and 12 cwts. and 40 bundles of fire crackers, 2,925 lbs.
sulphur, Safety cartridges 1 ton 3 qrs. 18 lbs. and
314,055 rounds.

export to other countries.

Medical,
1- The general health of the population was fair. There was no small-pox

irths and deaths. i = The tota i num ber o£ births and deaths was
a nd 1,044 against 703 and 2,082 respectively in 1908-09.
