W Two births were registered. No deaths were registered. One mar-
riage was restored under Act XV of 1885 and one under Act HI of 1872.
31 The Executive Committee of the Aden Settlement performs all the
duties which municipalities pertorm m India. Their
Municipal Administration. proceedings are regulated by the Aden Settlement
■Resulation VII of 1900 and rules framed thereunder, and are subject to the
control of the Resident. The income and the expen d.tnre of the Settlement
fund amounted to Rs. 4,18,949 and Rs. 3,19,069 as compared wrth Rs. 3 , 88,939
and Rs 8 70.330, respectively, in the preceding year, leaving a surplus of
Rs. 1,78,075 on the 31st March 1913.
32 Of the Public Works carried out during the year few call for remarks
but it may be noted that two more sweeper passages were made at a cost of
Rs, 4 822 and a sum of Rs. 2,166 was spent m providing drams and cement
concrete flooring to certain other passages.
A. bungalow for the use of the Chairman, Aden Settlement and Port Trust,
was built on the Church Bay Reclamation at a cost of Rs. 23,578, the
amount being met by equal shares by the Aden Settlement and the Port
Trust.
33. The works of converting the Racquet Court into an office for the
Settlement was completed during the year at a total cost of Rs. 26,159.
34. The expenditure incurred on the Sheikh Othman drainage works was
Rs. 12,462 during the year under report. The total expenditure to the end of
March amounted to Rs. 67,353.
35. The contagious diseases ward for women attached to the Civil Hospi
tal Aden, is now maintained by the Aden Settlement under the management of
the Civil Surgeon, Aden, with a view to check the spread of venereal disease
among the troops and civil population. It takes the place of the hospital
formerly known as the Lock Hospital which w T as maintained by the Cantonment
Fund, supported by an annual contribution of Rs. 800 from the Settlement
Fund and closed by the order of the Government of India (Army Department) in
April 1912. As its maintenance has devolved on the Settlement Fund, the
contribution to the Cantonment Fund was accordingly discontinued from
that date.
36. A steam roller and stone breaker were purchased at a cost of Rs. 8,303
for the maintenance and upkeep of the Settlement roads in Aden and Sheikh
Othman Divisions.
37. The construction of a new road to Dar-al-Amir was in progress and a
new Police Station was also erected on this road in place of the frontier
Police Chowkey No. 6.
38. Eighty-two European seamen were engaged and 72 discharged, the
corresponding numbers in 1911-1912 being 82 and
141. Six deaths were reported and the estate of one
deceased seaman adjusted. No seamen’s money orders were issued and 24
European distressed seamen were sent to the United Kingdom.
Two thousand three hundred and fifty Native seamen were engaged and
2,019 discharged against 2,451 and 2,312 respectively in 1911-1912. 5 Native
distressed seamen were sent to India. 10 deaths were reported and the estates
of 5 deceased seamen adjusted.
Forty-two shipping protests were noted but no certified copies were
supplied.
The Shipping fees received and credited to Government amounted to
Rs. 4,800 against Rs. 5,637 in 1911-1912.
39. The financial condition of the Aden Port Trust continued to be
Aden Port Trust. satisfactory. During the year the receipts were
. . , . Bs. 67,345 more than in the previous year, the closing
balance being Rs. 3,75,462.
The value of imports increased from Rs. 6,51,44,869 to Rs. 6,93,11,085 and
that of exports from Ks. 5,86,47,338 to Rs. 6,80,51,400.
