7 . The trade of Aden is mostly transhipment trade, the port serving
centre of distribution. The total sea-borne tr g i aS * a

about £ 873,137 in excess of the preceding year’s total of £ 7,853 SIB
showing the highest figures during the past five years. The trade with tl
interior of Arabia increased in imports and exports by £ 7,887 and £ 23 fin
respectively over the last year’s totals of £ 231,732 and 162,269. The incre *
in imports and exports was due to the Turco-Italian war, as owing to the block ^
of the Turkish Red Sea-ports by the Italians, the trade passed through the Ad
hinterland in greater bulk than usual.
The chief industries of Aden are salt and cigarette manufacture Th
Italian firm of Messrs. Burgarella Ajola and Co. have been doing * a vei - 9
profitable business in salt manufacture at Sheikh Othman for many years Tl/
Bombay firm of Messrs. Abdullabhoy and Joomabhoy Lallji and Co also
manufacture salt. The salt manufactured by these firms is not intended for local
consumption, the monopoly of which is in the hands of Government who have
licensed certain salt pits to Arabs, who worked the pits before the mononol
was purchased from the Abdali hultan. About 2/3rds of these salt-pits have
passed into the hands of Messrs. Cowasji Dinshaw and Brothers and Menahem
Messa. The cigarette industry is carried on, on a fairly large scale by Foreign
Jews and Greeks with tobacco imported from Egypt. Other industries like
house-building, mat-making, oil-pressing and boat-building exist but on small
scale.

Residency An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, established in the provinces and regions considered part of, or under the influence of, British India. .
