The quantity of excise salt issued from the Arab salt works at Sb "kl
Othman was 88,393 local maunds, of which about 19,818 were imported frT
consumption into the British territory and about 68,575 were exported to the
interior of Arabia.
The quantity of salt exported by the Italian Salt Company increased from
90,518! tons to 122,676 and the quit rent or royalty realized by the Aden
Settlement amounted to Rs. 61,338 against Rs. 45,259 in 1911-12. The
quantity of salt exported from Abdoolabhoy and Joomabhoy Lallji’s salt’ works
during the year increased from 13,439 tons to 40,654J tons.
12. There were no offences detected under the salt law during the year
under report.
13. Aden was declared a free port in 1850 and no customs duties are
levied except on liquors and intoxicating drugs. The
Customs. revenue from these sources is, however, credited to the
excise head on the authority of paragraph 2 of Government Resolution
Revenue Department, No. 2874 of the 17th April 1895.
By Government Resolution, Revenue Department, No. 3617, dated the 6th
April 1908, the Assistant Resident and Collector of A'bkari, Aden, is appointed
ex-officio Collector of Customs for the purpose of enforcing the prohibition
against the importation into Aden of certain game trophies specified in the
schedule to the Government of India Notification in the Department of Com
merce and Industry, No. 4902-62, dated 7th June 1907, as amended
Notification No. 3598-54 of the 20th May 1909.

Nine licenses for the possession of 1,108,520 gallons of non-dangerous
Petroleum petroleum and one license for the possession of
20,400 gallons of dangerous petroleum were issued
during the year and fetched in fees Rs. 1,963 against Rs. 636 in the preceding
year.
15. One hundred and twenty-four licenses were issued for the import,
Arms md ammunition. ?, Xp0rt ’ et J c :> of arms ’ ammunition, etc., against 71 in
the preceding year.
The following arms, etc., were imported into Aden during the year ending
31st December 1912 :—
For local sale. Cartridges 2,750 and 2 tons 13 cwts. 3 qrs. 6 lbs.
of fire-works (crackers).
For personal use. , Kifle ? 2 > revolver 1, swords 2, guns 2, spears 2
and cartridges 1,420.
Safety cartridges 36,765 and 6 cwts. 1 qr. 6^ lbs., signal cartridges 48,
For transhipment and 3 P or : 5 3 qrs. 26 lbs., cordial shells 80,
export to other countries. rifles 32, revolvers 3, guns 6, spears 10 , pistols 2,

The general health of the population was fair. The total number of
