13. MUNICIPAL.
D.M.G., East, reports as follows: — . os.
Public Works.—The purchase of the Awaina Public Garden site has
been sanctioned but not yet carried through. Maps, papers, etc., are with
Tapu Department and it is hoped to complete the transaction during the next
week.
During the month : —
477 Surveys of private buildings have been made.
468 Building Permits issued.
9 Demolition Orders served.
Municipal Veterinary Hospital.—Return showing admissions and dis
charges during the past month is attached (Appendix " B
The accounts show a steadily increasing cash balance of Rs. s 1,567-7-3.;
The proposalto start a class for shoeing Smiths of the Arab Militia" has
had to be modified owing to the inability of the authorities to procure the
necessary tools. It is hoped, however, to train 3 to 4 men at a time with-the
tools belonging to the Veterinary Hospital.
As regards the portion owned by Waqf the proposed exchange has been
sanctioned by their Majlis and the adhi, and the transaction remains to be
registered in Tapu.
The reclamation of the site is going on steadily and should be completed
before the rainy season.
Work on the Haider-Khana Municipal Market, Municipal Stables and
Veterinary Hospital has not yet been commenced.
Control of Meat.—The total number of sheep slaughtered during the
month in Baghdad East was 9,664—a daily average of approximate 312—
. as against the allotted number of 286 per diem, cattle slaughtered during
this period numbered 416.
D.M.G., West, reports, as follows:—
Maude Gardens.—“ The popularity of the garden increases every day.
On two occasions during the month a band has very kindly been lent by Ad
vanced Section Headquarters and it has been much appreciated.
The tea garden lease realised Rs. 1,266 for the three months ending
October 8th. No expenditure being incurred by the Baadiyah at all in this
connection.’’ ' . ' : i
The existing Water Supply has been proving very unsatisfactory and in
adequate, and the present system of intakes exposes the town to great risk
of epidemics at the low water season in spite of all precautions * that it is
possible to take. . . ,
The M.O.H. reports aS follows:-
The Cesspit cleaning establishment has been reduced from 1st Septem
ber, 1919, to one Overseer and 30 Cesspit cleansers resulting in a reduction of
Rs.' 2,665 monthly of the expenditure on the sanctioned establishment. The
Mosques have been cleaned by private contract for the last four months and
the Southern area of the town has been done privately for three months. As
this private cesspit cleaning has been successful I have now extended it to
the whole town with the exception of the Northern third and will maintain
. the reduced establishment for that area and for street cesspits and Govern
ment billets and urgent works.
14. HOSPITALS AND DISPENSARIES.
A Shia Sub-Assistant Surgeon has been posted to Kadhimain. There
were 1,645 attendances at the Dispensary during the month.
The Dispensary at Karradah which was shut down is to be re-opened on
a basis of three days a week.
15. TOURS OF P.O.’s.
Short tours only have been carried out. By the courtesy of the R.A.F.
I was able to fly over the land which will be commanded by the Yusufiyah
1 Canal extension.
16. MISCELLANEOUS.
Distinguished visitors to Baghdad have included Mgr. Smets, Apostolic
Delegate, and Haji Rais.
