The number for the year is 7,108, against 4,918 in 1877-78. Averaw
daily attendance during the same periods being 1007 and 887 respedivefv
The surgical operations numbered 505, and in pievious year 309. The rate pgr
cent, of women and children was 32'4 in 1877-78 and 39'5 during the year. Of
the total treated 8 were admitted as in-patients, a ward having beeu opened
towards the close of year. All admissions were subjects for surgical operations.
147. The diseases treated were principally the
Diseases. same as those given for Civil Hospital.
148. With increase of patients the expenditure has nevertheless decreased
chiefly on account of cost of medical stores. The
Receipts and Expenditure, expenditure was Rs. 4,188 against Rs. 4,427 for the
previous year, leaving a balance of Rs. d04 in hand. The receipts have been
Rs. 4,987 against Rs,4,366 in 1877-78.
(/).—YaCCI NATION.
149. The number of vaccine operations were 826 against 653 in the pre.
vious year. Of the operations, 665 were successful
The Settlement generally. Vaccination failed in September 1878, and nearly so
in August for want of lymph. Government have directed five tubes of English
lymph to be supplied to the station during the months of August and November
each year.
It is contemplated to extend primary vaccination by means of the Charit
able Dispensary.
VII.—INSTRUCTION.
(a). —Education.
English School.
150. There has been no change in the staff of
teachers during the past year.
151, The monthly attendance average 61 against 55 the year before. The
average of pupils on the register being 70 to 61 of the
former year. There has been a continued increase in
Teaching Staff.

152. The receipts for school fees were Rs. 263
against Rs. 234 for 1877-78, or an increase of Rs. 29.
Arabic School.
153. The number of pupils receiving religious and secular instruction
. , , shows an average of 136 against 156 in 1877-78; the
en ance ' falling off was in consequence of the reduction of the
population during the year.
The Aden schools have not been inspected yet by the Educational Depart
ment.

Annual administration report of the Aden Settlement, providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Administration of Aden during the financial year 1878-79. The report is addressed, in a covering memorandum, by Brigadier-General Francis Loch, Political Resident A senior ranking political representative (equivalent to a Consul General) from the diplomatic corps of the Government of India or one of its subordinate provincial governments, in charge of a Political Residency. , Aden, to the Secretary to the Government, Bombay, 21 May 1879. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai].

Tables indicating the number of square miles of the peninsula of Aden under the control of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. , and relating to the civil divisions of Aden and the population is on folio 160. A table of contents listing the Chapter numbers and headings of Part II is on folio 161 (‘chapter’ is not used in the main body of the report). This is followed by a name, place and subject index are on folio 162.
The covering memorandum indicates that a Subsidiary Sanitary Report is also attached, however this is not present in this copy.
