ON
THE EXPLORATION OF THE CAUCASUS.
THE TIMES.
‘ Mr. Freshfield has chosen a great subject and has produced a work
in every way worthy of it. Monumental it is, but it is much more : its
outward features are no doubt a delight, but inside it is stored with
treasures The illustrations are not mere attractive pictures.
Every one is significant and appropriate, a visual presentment of some
portion of the text. They are models of what illustrations of this class
ought to be Mr. Freshfield is as skilled in narrative as he is in
mountaineering. He wastes no space in trivial details, the essential
incidents and features of each journey are arranged with the hand of an
artist who aims to produce a certain effect and knows how to do it.
Sentiment and science, the dangers and the humours of the situation,
are well balanced.’
THE MORNING POST.
‘ It may safely be said that in many important respects no more
admirable book of travel has appeared of late years. The illustrations,
which are of extraordinary beauty, have been reproduced from photo
graphs for the most part taken by Signor Vittorio Sella.’
THE DAILY NEWS.
‘ These volumes are instructive without being didactic, full of novel
information without any suggestion of guide-book literature, contain
most graphic descriptions of scenery without even descending to
word-painting, and contrive to impart freshness even to the well-worn
theme of mountain and glacier expeditions Even for those
who are unable to take any interest in the Caucasus, and regard
mountain literature as an abomination, these well-written chapters will
have an attraction, for they possess the quality of style.’
THE DAILY CHRONICLE.
‘ No record of exploration has ever been published in this country in
so splendid si material form To all who know, Mr. Freshfield’s
name will be a sufficient guarantee of their contents. To those who do
not know we can only say in a word that a more interesting, more vivid,
more conscientious, more exhaustive, and, in fact, more thrilling account
of a region comparatively unknown has never yet come before us.’
