THE EXPLORATION OF THE CAUCASUS.
3
THE STANDARD.
‘ We have in these volumes a book of like character to, but even more
complete than, Mr. Whymper’s “ Travels among the Great Andes of the
Equator for it is not too much to say that no such complete memoir
of a mountain chain has been published since the first awakening of an
interest in the ascents of peaks and the structure of glaciers.’
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH.
‘No book of travel or exploration within our remembrance has
disclosed such a wealth of illustration as the one now before us—a
deeply interesting work, the typographical production of which is worthy
of unstinted admiration.’
THE ST. JAMES’S GAZETTE.
‘ If all works of mountaineering had the attraction of Mr. Douglas
Freshfield’s, such reading would become popular instead of being limited
to the shelves of collectors.’
THE PALL MALL GAZETTE.
‘Never have the majesty of glaciers, the awe-inspiring silence of per
petual snow, the splendour of mountain scenery, been more vividly
described than in the language of Mr. Freshfield and the pictures of
Signor Sella. Smooth style and fine humour add to the attractions of a
book which will kindle the enthusiasm of mountaineers and spur them
to make every corner of this remote range as familiar as the recesses of
the Alps.’
THE WORLD.
‘ Certainly nothing could be more splendid than these volumes with
the superb mountain pictures of Signor Sella to adorn their pages
The whole work forces us to believe that mountaineering is nowadays
not only a mere recreation but a valuable handmaid of geography.’
THE ATHEN.32UM.
‘ Mr. Freshfield’s book contains the digested study and experience of
nearly thirty years. Perhaps, if we must give him a class, we must
borrow one from Carlyle, and call him the traveller as man of letters.
THE ALPINE JOURNAL.
‘ We heartily congratulate Mr. Freshfield, Signor Sella, and all who
have contributed to these noble volumes—appropriately dedicated to the
memory of W. F. Donkin.
‘ The map—the first authentic map of the whole Central Caucasus—
will be to future travellers in the Caucasus what the Alpine Club map
was to travellers in the South-western Alps, and much more. How
