the newspapers also, but only after being censored by Wassmuss. They were able
to bathe frequently in the hot spring and the river. Wassmuss, he said, found it
difficult to meet his daily expenses, and his influence had entirely gone. In fact
at Ahram there was a strong feeling against him and about a month ago shots had
been fired at him.
Dr. Azzopardy seemed none the worse for seven months’ captivity.
Behbehan.
Considerable unrest may be said to prevail in Behbehan and the surrounding
country. Behbehan has been subject, almost nightly, to raids from neighbouring
tribes, and many inhabitants have been killed.
On the 3rd June His Majesty King George V’s Birthday was observed by
Bushire. dressing the flagstaff.
On the 5th June the Commodore proceeded in H. M. S. “ Juno,” accompanied
by H. M. S. “ Lawrence,” to Karri, a short distance down the coast, to give one
Zair Haji, the Kadkhuda, an opportunity to apologize for insulting the British
flag by firing at the Kadkhuda of a neighbouring village while returning from
a visit to one of His Majesy’s ships. The Kadkhuda made off to the hills on learning
of the approach of H. M. S. “ Juno.” Both towers of Karri were destroyed by the
“ Juno’s ” guns and two large booms belonging to the Kadkhuda were brought to
Bushire.
Lingah.
As reported in Monthly Summary for May, the Sheikhs of various ports on
the Shibkuh coast, who had assisted the murderers of the Kesidency Agent, Lingah,
were deposed by the Governor of the Gulf Ports. The latter however found it was
necessary to drive them out. The Governor of the Gulf Ports not being in a position
to make any demonstration by sea himself, asked and obtained the co-operation
of the Commodore, Persian Gulf. The forts at the small ports of Asalu and Nakhl-i-
Taki were bombarded by the “ Juno ” on the 22nd June, the tribesmen of AliAkbar
Galadari and Sheikh Mazkur fled inland and Muhammad Ahmad Khalfan was
installed as Sheikh of these two villages. Darya Begi also found it necessary to
replace the Sheikhs of Kangun and Myanlu, and is at present dealing with the
obdurate Sheikhs of Shiwuh and Chiru. The Governor has gained bloodless
victories and the Commodore reports that he is of opinion that prestige of Persian
Government has been considerably enhanced by the strong line the Darya Begi
has taken on this occasion.
Mirza Mahmud has been replaced as Deputy Governor, Lingah, by Muhammad
Beza Khan, Satwat-ul-Mamalik, the son of the Sowlet-ul-Mulk, Zabitof Bastak.
Darya Begi’s presence early in the month prevented a large tribal feud at
Charak, the Sheikh of Tauna had occupied the village of Nakhl-i-mir belonging to
Sheikh Saleh of Charak. Several neignbourmg Sheikhs were on the point of joining
the Sheikh of Tauna when Darya Begi arrived and with his tufangchis restored
the village of Nakhl-i-mir to the Sheikh of Charak.
The Mekran Coast.
Mir Barkat, the Khalifa, and other agitators and disturbers of the peace have
been quies cent throughout the month. It is rumoured that Islam Khan is anxious
to drive Bahram Khan out of Bampur fort, but he has been informed that as
Bahram Khan has now made a truce with the British Government he cannot
attack him without incurring our displeasure.
Kerman.
Brigadier-General Sir P. Sykes with the first part of his escort arrived at
Kerman on the 11th June, the second part reached Kerman a few days later.
Major D. L. B. Lorimer has been appointed Consul for Kerman, and is now
at Bandar Abbas collecting transport, and awaiting an opportunity to proceed.
