7. On June 25th news was received from Pilwar that two bands of tufangchis,
numbering from 50 to 80 men, had arrived from Dashti, as the result of Rais Ali of
Pilwar’s visit to Dashti on Wassmuss’ behalf. At the same time about 40 tufang
chis with one chief were said to have come to Shamshiri, Wassmuss’ headquarters,
from Dashti. The Governor received a letter from the aged Jamal Khan of Dashti
dated the 20th to the effect that against his advice many of the district were listening
to the instigations of Wassmuss and his party: and a letter from Jamal Khan’s
cousin, head of the other party in Dashti, dated the 21st stated that Rais Ali of
Dilwar had bribed the chiefs in Dashti with some £ 2,000, and that the situation
was grave.
8. There is a considerable anxiety felt in Bushire at the possibility of attack,
when local Persians would probably suffer more than British residents : but there
is a general idea that the confederates are using Wassmuss to obtain as much money
as they can and will not dare to attack the British position which is now strongly
fortified. One muleteer was wounded by a British sentry on the 20th on trying
to pass into Bushire Island at night.
9. The whole town is complaining of the exactions of the new so-called Rais-i-
Adliyeh or Head of the Department of Justice which has earned the Soubriquet of
the Department of Jnjustice.
10. H. M. S. “ Lawrence ” arrived from the Shatt-al-Arab on the 10th June.
On the 21st she left again for the Shatt-al-Arab and returned again on 24th.
The Officer Commanding has, with the assistance of this Residency made arrange
ments for the Customs armed launches to patrol the creeks at each end of the
“ Island
Lingeh.
11. Residency Agent has heard that the letters contained instructions to the
Shaikhs to prevent the landing of any force from British men-of-war and to be pre
pared to send reinforcements to Lingeh whenever required.
12. News has been received from Lar that Manicke arrived there and was shown
great honour by the Deputy Governor of Lar and was despatched thence under
escort of 10 sowars to Shiraz.
Bandar Abbas.
13. Abdul Rasul, late Kalantar of Bushire, arrived on the 10th instant to bring
about a reconciliation between the local merchants and the Deputy Governor.
He succeeded in his object and left again for Bushire on the 18th.
14. On the 10th instant soon after noon a murderous attack was made in the
Camp of Mr. W T right and European officials of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company
near Salakh by four men armed with rifles. The four Europeans were sitting in
their mess tent and their assailants suddenly opened a heavy fire at very close range.
Fortunately they shot very badly and the only casualty was one servant hit in the
neck. Mr. Wright and the others managed with some difficulty to get at their rifles
in an adjoining tent and returned fire and eventually their assailants retired. Mr.
Wright and party came to Henjam and have since left for Muhammareh. The
Deputy Governor of Bandar Abbas took active measures and has traced the offend
ers who were nine in number to Mahtabi in the Bastak district. The Kawam-ul-
Mulk at the influence of the Residency has issued urgent orders to the Soulet-ul-
Mulk, Deputy Governor of Bastak, to apprehend the men, three of whom have been
identified. The attack appears to have been solely with a view to murdering the
Europeans, no attempt at robbery having been made.
15. The Governor-General has again defeated the Afshars and Gunj Ali Khan
issuing for peace. Governor-Genera I has formulated his terms but it is not yet
reported whether Gunj Ali Khan has accepted them or not. G un j Ali Khan has been
mis-representing matters to Tehran and the Governor-General is not being properly
supported from there. Meanwhile the Baluchis are reported to be on the move and
the return of the Governor-General to Kerman may become urgent.
