left at Kazarun in their barracks. Soon after midnight the gendarmes (32 in num
ber) evacuated their barracl^ and took refuge in the Telegraph Office. During the
night the Governor of Kazarun, with some of the dependants, and his one cannon,
also took bast in the office.
State of Province,
(g) On 22nd November, Ali Muhammad with his following (now increased to
several hundred men) turned the gendarmes out of all their posts between Kazarun
and the Tang-i-Turkan, including those of the village of Behris and the Rahdar
caravanserai, in the one direction, and up to the Pul Abgingeh in the other. At
Dehris the gendarmerie Sultan, in command of the Kazarun section of the road,
was captured, stripped, and sent into Kazarun, and the Persian Mirza represent
ing the Finance Agent was also captured and wounded (he was afterwards killed
in cold blood). Thus in the course of 24 hours the whole system of road control
which had been so carefully built up during the past six months, and which
appeared to be working so well, broke down altogether over some 22 miles of road.
The gendarmes in occupation of strong towers and caravanserais surrendered to
a handful of brigands almost without a struggle, and by evening of the 23rd the
garrisons of the various posts were in bast in the Telegraph Office, most of them
having been deprived of their rifles and stripped naked.
{h) On 27th November, the Darya Begi left for Kazarun with a small force
of some 100 sowars and 200 sarbazes, and one 8-centimetre gun.
1526. On 14th December, Colonel Merrill arrived at Shiraz to undertake the
reorganization of the local troops. He was accompanied by a M. Kambeau, a
young Frenchman, who has come to Shiraz in the capacity of Colonel MerrilPs
Private Secretary, but whom the Colonel proposes to utilise in training the cavalry.
1527 (a) Except for the unfortunate events which have taken place at Kaza
run there is no news of importance during the first week under report. The Ka-
wam-ul-Mulk was near Darab, but there was no information to show what progress
he was making in his efforts to reduce the Baharlus to a proper state of subjection.
He has postponed action in Laristan for the present.
(b) All interest during the week ending 29th November was centred on the
events taking place at and near Kazarun which are detailed lower down.
Letters were received from the Kawam-ul-Mulk to the effect that the Baharlus
were still rebellious, and that he was therefore collecting a large force of Arabs in the
neighbourhood of Darab with which to subdue them.
(c) During the week ending 6th December, news from the Kawam-ul-Mulk
was favourable. It appeared that he had had some small engagements with the
Baharlus in which he had been successful. Fuller details were expected in a day
or two. J

(d) The state of the province was generally speaking quiet during the week
ending 13th December.

T e districts generally were quiet, and revenue was coming in satisfactorily.
T here was no fresh news of the Kawam-ul-Mulk. The situation at Kazarun was not
very satisfactory. There were still a considerable number of armed tufangchis
a t0 peace of the town, and who would probably join
All Muhammad m the mountains if any attempt were made to disarm them. The
hlasr-i-Diwan returned to Kazarun with the tufangchis and was in relations with
the Darya Begi.
152 * w With reference to paragraph vm (/) above, the whole Kazarun
district had risen during the week ending 29th November against the gendarmes
who had been expelled from their barracks at Kazarun itself and from the various
towers and caravanserais from Tang-i-Turkan to Pul Abgingeh-a distance of

and by the end of the week under report not less than 109 gendarmes (including
