1054. It is said that the new Governor-General of Ears and the Darya Begi
have written to Zair Khadhar directing him not to pay in his revenue. Zair
Khadhar is reported to have sent some of his men against the village of Tul-i- m
Siyah on which they opened fire; the total casualties, however, appear to have been *
only two donkeys.
1055. A native of Lirawi, returning to that place from Ahmedi with a gun and
100 Tomans in his possession, was seized by Ahmed Khan of Angali and both his legs
cut off.
1056. The Kalantar of Bushire, who has in his employ 10 Angalis and is on
good terms with Ahmed Khan of Angali, is said to be intriguing with a view to
getting the Shaikh of Chahkutah into trouble and thereby bringing about a return
to the Shief route.
1057. A party of about 20 Kashgais of the Kashkuli section with their families
arrived from Shiraz during the week ending 27th October. Eight of them with
their families left for Kerbela and the remainder are awaiting the arrival of another
party of their kinsmen, who are expected shortly.
1058. Haji Mirza Ghulam Husein, the Persian banker, informed His Majesty’s
Vice-Consul that he had received a letter from Haji Muhammad Jaffer Lari, a
merchant of Lar, dated the 26th Shawal (=8th October) stating that he had been
expecting 2 bales consigned to him by Haji Mirza Ghulam Hussein Kazeruni via
Bandar Abbas, and had news of the bales reaching six farsakhs from Lar in safety,
and had hoped to take delivery the next day. News was, however, brought to him
that the Baharlus had carried them off together with a caravan of 2,000 head. They
estimate the value of the looted caravan at 500,000 Krans. The attack of the Ba
harlus was attributed to revenge for the imprisonment of some of the tribe by Seyyid
Abdul Husein Lari.
Condition of 1059. Recent arrivals among the muleteers report that Husein Kuli, who has
andlpostaflervice ^ a ^ en pl ace Khurshid Khan at Kamarij, stops muleteers and compels them to
* bring stones for building a fort on the hill called Ab Tehloo which commands the
Tang-i-Turkan.
1060. Owing to hostilities between the Kamarijis and Borasjunis, the Khan
of the latter place, who is not in a position to take any action against the former,
is harassing the Kazerunis by seizing their goods on the plea of their siding with the
Kamarijis. It is reported that in pursuance of this policy he recently seized some
250 loads of gum coming from Kazerun.
1061. During the week ending October 14th, seven Persian Parsis arrived
from Yezd on their way to India where they intend to settle down. They received
a considerable amount of ill-treatment on the way down from Shiraz in addition to
being blackmailed by the tufangchis en route.
Having no cash they were obliged to surrender a cheque for 250 Tomans on a
Bushire merchant, which was accepted by the muleteer and the cash paid to the
tufangchis. This amount is said to have been the entire value of their belongings
sold at Yezd. It is said that travellers on the road have been warning offending
tufangchis that Russian troops are coming down with the new Governor-General
with a view to punishing the delinquents.
1062. The Turkish Consul is said to have proposed to his Minister at Tehran
the abolition of the post of Turkish Consul at Bushire and the creation instead of
a Consulate at Lingah, the post at Bushire being converted into a Consular Agency.
The importance of being in closer touch with Oman is the reason said to have been
given by the Turkish Consul for the proposed change.
1063. The Tazkereh Department is said to have received orders from the
Central authorities to prohibit pilgrims from proceeding to Jeddah, owing to the
cholera prevalent at the latter port. The Department in question, however, per
mits them to leave by describing on their passes “ destination Suez.” The Gov-
ernor permits this subterfuge, partly from fear of making himself unpopular and
partly because it is to his interest to get the Tazkereh stamps sold off, the latter,
it is said, having been mortgaged by him to a Banker.
