2. C, a Hokkien woman, aged 40 years, was charged with failing to report the inf d
marriage of a Mui Tsai, D, aged 17 years (an offence under Rule 5 (a) of the Rules und ! f
Mui Tsai Enactment). She was fined o dollars. The Protector of Chinese was satisfied ,f'
the marriage w r as bona fide.
3. E, a Hokkien woman, aged 25 years, was charged with an offence under Section q
of the Children Enactment. She had ill-treated her prospective daughter-in-law F '
3 years. E was fined 50 dollars, or four weeks rigorous imprisonment. The fine\ ’ ™
and the girl was returned to the custody of her parents.

4. Following a report of ill-treatment of G, a registered Mui Tsai, aged 17 years who

also the prospective daughter-in-law of her employer, H, a Hokkien, aged "45 years fi,
Mui Tsai was removed from the custody of her employer and later returned to her real Daio f
and her registration cancelled. H was also ordered to pay 47 dollars to the Mui Tsaij!

5. I, a Cantonese woman, aged 32 years, was charged under Section 3 (i) ( e ) of theWome
and Girls’ Protection Enactment with bringing into the State for prostitution two girls a J
respectively 17 and 18 years. She was convicted and sentenced to four months simple
imprisonment, and subsequently banished. The two girls were returned to Singapore
whence she had brought them, and there they were committed to the Po Leung Kuk. ° F

3. Information was received that E, 12 years, was an unregistered Mui Tsai and was
ill-treated. She was removed to the Po Leung Kuk, but though it appeared that she had
been given a good deal of work and occasionally beaten, it was not considered that there was
sufficient evidence to take the case to court. She was accordingly released to the family
m which she had been found on security (under Section 21 (i) of the Mui Tsai Enactment
that she be not treated as a Mui Tsai.
Kedah. — A, a registered Mui Tsai, aged 17 years, was found to be pregnant and admitted
that her employer’s son was responsible for her condition. The son also admitted this. It
was arranged that the boy should marry her, but subsequently the girl refused to marry him
The employer offered compensation. A sum of 150 dollars has been deposited in the girl’s
name in the Post Office Savings Bank by her employer, and she has agreed to marry another
2. B, a Cantonese woman, was suspected of having brought two girls, C and D, 10
and 8 years, from China for sale as Mui Tsai. One of the girls was found in the household
to which she was to be sold and the other was later discovered in a place of hiding. Evidence
of a sufficiently strong nature to enable the case to be taken to court was not obtainable.
One of the girls, however, was on bond in Penang under Section 13 of the Straits Settlements
Women and Girls’ Protection Ordinance. The girls were returned to Penang, where they were
committed to the Po Leung Kuk under Section 13 of the Straits Settlements Women and
Girls’ Protection Ordinance, and the bond of 300 dollars was estreated.
4. F, a Cantonese woman, brought a girl, G, 5 years, from China, claiming her to be
aer daughter. Investigation showed that the girl was not her own daughter and that it i
was reasonable to suppose that she was intended as a Mui Tsai. She was later released upon
ond (under Section 21 (i) of the Mui Tsai Enactment) not to be employed as a Mui Tsai.
