Burj to the Shahzadeh to send a man to welcome the Turkish Commodore.
The Prince on this sent Mirza Iladavit and a shawl as a present; eight toomans
were given as a present to the servants of Mirza Hadayit.
The Turkish Commodore expressed a desire to see the Prince, which His
Highness consented to, and arranged to receive him with a guard of 50 Sirbaz
and Sherbets, &c.
The Poreign Agent had no intimation of these proceedings, for when he
sent to ask an interview of the Prince he appointed the afternoon; when he
called in the afternoon and saw the preparations he altered the arrangements
in regard to the Sirbaz and Sherbets, and wished to return home. But the
Prince persuaded him to stay; when the Turkish Commodore arrived, the Hutch
Consul and Mirza Mahomed Tukkee were in his company. After the usual
ceremonies, they broke up and next day returned to their ships, which left for
Busreh.

As connected with the telegram from the Political Besident in the Persian
Gulf, dated the 30th July last
(transcribed on the margin for
facility of reference), and subse
quent telegrams, I am directed
to enclose, for submission to the
Government of India, copy of
letters as noted below from Colonel Pelly, respecting the affairs of Guttur in
relation to the Turkish expedition towards Nejd:—
1. Letter No. 847-218, dated the 31st Inly 1871, with accompaniments.
2. „ „ 899-238, „ the 14th August 1871, with accompaniments.
3. ,, ,, 900-239, ,, the 14th August 1871, with accompaniments.
Magpie arrived. Major Smith found Turkish flag on Jassim’s
house. Arah flag on bin Thani’s at Bidda. Outtur Chief
explained by letter. Turkish flag was hoisted by desire of
Turkish Commander, who sent it through Koweit. Chief does
not appear. Turkish steamer entered port. Chief verbally
referred English to Turkish Sultan, regarding hoisting flag.

2. I beg to enclose in original a precis of news, also a report with appen-

Turkish expedition towards Nejd. Enclosed also is
a copy of a letter I have received from the Senior
Naval Officer on the same subject.
3. As the mail is leaving to-day, time does not admit of my doing more
than transmit these reports.
I. I have already had the honor of submitting two telegrams, abstracting

5. Major Smith s request for instructions as to what course should he
pursued in the event of the Guttur or other tribes under the Turkish flag
