lo Secietaiy to the Government of India, Foreign Department.
I have the honor to forward, for the information of His Excellency the
Viceroy and Governor General in Council, copy of my Despatch of this day’s
date, addressed to Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for Foreign
Affairs,, reporting that His Highness Syed Burgash has ratified the Treaty
abolishing the slave-trade. J
I have the honor to enclose a true copy of this Treaty herewith.

I HAVE the honor to report that yesterday afternoon His Highness Syed
Burgash ratified the new Treaty for the total abolition of the slave-trade in his
dominions, which had been signed by Syed Naser bin Saeed the same day on his
behalf, and by me oh the part of Her Majesty the Queen.
. For the reasons given in the opening paragraph of my previous Despatch
No. 49 of the 5th instant, the Treaty has been made and signed in Arabic only,
and I leave it to the Keverend P. Badger to render the exact and literal
meaning of. that text, as it was he who reduced the Arabic draft, which was my
only guide in this matter.
I should have much preferred' had it been practicable to have executed
the Treaty at once in both languages, but being sure that the Arabic is the
correct rendering of what was presented to His Highness by Sir Bartle Frere
and not being able to retranslate it into English, using the very words that
were employed by Your Lordship, I have preferred adhering to what I was
sure of, leaving it for Your Lordship, after consultation with Mr. Badger
to insert the English rendering in the language before employed.
I shall await Your Lordship’s orders and directions in what way the copy
I retain for His Highness will be ratified on the part of Her Majesty, and
whether any formal powers are needed before doing so.
The copy ratified by His Highness I shall send to London by the first safe
occasion.

No. 30, dated Zanzibar, 10th June 1873.

I have already had the honor to report that the same day as that on
which, the Treaty was signed by His Highness for the total suppression of the
slave-trade and closing of the public slave-markets throughout his dominions,
the market that here has so long been one of the institutions of the place and
that only a few months ago was removed from the site it had so long occupied
was cleared by messengers sent from the palace.
2. ; Qn the day following, namely the 6th June, certain Arabs collected in
the space that lately had been put in order for the public sale of slaves,
and would have made some demonstration, but on arrival of His Highness’
soldiers they quilely dispersed ; thus as regards the town of Zanzibar that part
of the new Treaty has been given full effect to.
