plain, and stretching eastward for some distance. These hills are very narrow ; their
southern cultivated slopes are gentle and up to 5°; their northern slopes_ are steep. They
are composed of reddish sandstone and gravel conglomerates. The wheat growing in the vicinity
is of excellent quality, and will be fit to
cut before the end of April. The corn is
generally cut, and trodden out by donkeys,
&c., &c., by the middle of May.
The river lies one-half mile to the west.

Village ... A village 3 miles to the westward ; the
road followed over this level plain is
broad and hard. Villages are very rare, yet the soil appears to be of excellent quality. No crops
grown here, except that of barley, which is used as fodder. Being
cut when green, it reproduces itself yearly, and forms an excel
lent food for cattle.

Passes ruins, of which the only indi
cations are mounds overgrown with grass,
broken down walls, slabs of cut stone, &c.
Crosses a disused canal running towards
Wais, 100' wide, 5' deep, and skirts it ; good cultivation.
11-15 ... ... Canal, with water in it, runs off towards
the river.
11-30 Wais ... 11 93 A small village of mud huts with an
| imamzada occupying an area of about 150
| yards X 150 yards, and with about 200
inhabitants ; good wheat cultivated. There
is a ferry boat here similar to that at
Ummu’t-Temr ; river 275 yards to 300 yards wide. Banks 12' above level of the water.
Febey
tan, and a fresh safe-conduct is required.
No traffic seen on the river. The
authority of the Shaikh of Muhammerah
extends to this village ; to the northward
the country is under the ruler of Arabis-
Road skirts the left bank of the Kanin river.
Above Wais the light alluvial soil is admirably suited for the growth of grain.

On right bank ; plain well cultivated.
The river here is about 400 yards wide,
flowing between perpendicular banks of
... , - clay, 12'to 15'high. It continues to be of
this character to Band-i-Kir (cut up by ravines). The country to the coast is treeless. Flocks,
of sheep are less numerous than heretofore.
