The sketch shows a maritime/topographical view of a coastal region near or at the British Settlement at Aden in present-day Yemen.
The view was sketched from on board ship and shows one dhow A term adopted by British officials to refer to local sailing vessels in the western Indian Ocean. and seven other craft; one of the vessels in the foreground is a five-oared boat, with tiny pencil marks denoting figures on board. Along the horizon from the right to the left of the image jagged peaks give way to flatter-topped ranges extending down and out to the sea.
