13. Bokharan recruits are drilled at Kagan, and then sent against the rebels in
advance of the trained Russian troops, who fire on them at the slightest sign of their
desertion to the rebels. In this way practically all the casualties suffered by the
Russians at the hands of the rebels, are Muhammadans. /
14. Reference Diary No. 28, paragraph 14. Faizullah Khoja has returned
from Moscow, where he was decorated by the Soviet for his services. On his return
to Bokhara the Khoja stated that when the rebels were beaten, the Russian troons
would leave the Bokharan Province and the administration would be handed over
to a local government.
15. It is-rumoured that a German Consul will shortly arrive for Bokhara and
that another will pass through for Afghanistan.
16. Rebels are said to be increasing in number in the Bokhara-Kagan area
and along the railway to Kermineh. Kizil Tepe Station bazar was sacked a few
days ago.
17. Kirki, 8th September .—Turkomans who crossed into Afghanistan to avoid
conscription by the Russians, have left their families in Afghanistan and returned
to take part in the plundering of Russian posts along the Oxus. Turkomans
engaged in these attacks are said to number several thousands.
18. The railway from Kaishi to Kirki is not working.
19. Guzar, 10th September .—The rebels have pushed the Russians back to
within 20 miles of Guzar. This reporter states that the Russians were in Derbent
for 15 days from the beginning of August, but were driven out by rebel reinforce
ments brought by Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. himself from Hissar. Enver controlled the fighting,
and when the Russians were forced well back towards Guzar, he left for the Termez
front. The rebels captured 3 guns in the fighting at Derbent, but lost heavily in
killed and wounded. Rebels are said to number 20,000 in this area, and are offi
cered by Russians and Ottoman Turks. They had plenty of guns and machine
guns, but were short of ammunition.
20. Fighting continues near Yakkabag, but has ceased at Shahr-i-Sabz, as the
rebels operating at the latter place have moved off in the direction of Samarkand.
21. Russian reinforcements are arriving at Guzar.
Samarkand.
22. Ora Tappa (Ura Tyube), 8th September .—Rebels are increasing in the
Samarkand District, and are supposed to be from Shahr-i-Sabz. They are in
possession of all the villages off the railway line, the inhabitants of which are assist
ing them with supplies. Many Russian troops are deserting to the rebels. Priests
have declared Holy War against the Bolsheviks, and Enver Pasha’s agents are
collecting recruits for the rebel forces.

ci i 2 ?' S e V tember 9th. Fighting is reported to be in progress between Khdkand and
bkobelef m several places along the railway, also at Andijan and Namangan, which
towns the Russians occupy. Skobelef was entered and held by the rebels for three
days, when reinforcements from Khokand drove them out again. Tash Polad
(vide Diary No. 11, paragraph 22) is said to have been captured by the Russians
when bkobelef was re-taken.
