BOLSHEVIK GARRISONS.
Transcaspla.—^o change recorded except that the troops in Askhabad
comprise very few Russians.
Charjui. —30th November 1921.
. Ope thousand and eight hundred and 400 sailors. Majority Muslims and
including 1,000 Bokharan troops. Bolshevik element 550. About 250 machine
gunners and artillery. IJnits : 17th Samara, a new designation. 1st Bokha
ran Training Division. 8 guns (field), 2 heavy. (Information by a vzvodnik
of the Training Division.)
Tetmez. —5th November 1921.
One thousand and three hundred Bolshevik troops, 300 Young Bokharan.
Of these 300 Bolshevik and 150 Bokharans are mounted. Bolshevik units
4th and 21st Turkestan. These two regiments number together 6,000 * (?)
and find garrisons for all posts along the Amu Darya as well as for inland
posts in the Termez area. Bokharan unit is the 6th Vostochni (Eastern) Novui
Bukharski. 2 heavy, 3 field guns. 2 lorries. 2 aeroplanes, one recently
wrecked. . (Information by supply agent to Bokharan unit.) Garrison Com
mandant is Hassan Effendi, said to be identical with the former head of the
‘‘Adalat” party.
Bokhara. —1st December 1921.
Two thousand, all Bokharans. 7 guns, 2 of which are kept in the
Salamanskaya. 2 armoured cars in Kagan for dealing with Bokharan
disturbances. 2 aeroplanes aviators Turks. Bokharan regiments nominal
strength is 1,300 but none exceeds 5—600. Each regiment has usually 2 guns
a pd 3 machine guns. (Information by demoblized man of 1st Vostochni
Sibirski Regiment—500 strong all Tatars under Bajanov, a Tatar, and en route
from Bokhara to Shahr-i-Sabz.)
Ouzar. —29th November 1921.
Six hundred, comprised of 250 Bokharan and 350 Bolshevik troops. Units :
14th Turkestan and 5th New Bokharan—2 companies only. 2 guns. A
projector. Wireless.
Jizak< —3rd December 1921.
Eour hundred, majority Muslims and including 50 mounted. Unit: 6th
Chernyaev. 3 guns. 1 armoured car. Wireless.
Kokand. —4th December 1921.
Three thousand, including 1,000 mounted. Units do not agree with those
given in Intelligence Summary 48.
Andijan Area. —24th November 1921.
Andijan town 1,200. Qurban Tappe (100 versts from Andijan and between
that town and Jalalabad). 500 in Kokand Grishloq. 300 at Eerghaniski
(Eedchenko ?) Railway Station.
Tashkent. —A certificate of release issued by the Special Department of
the 1st Army of the Turk-front to an agent of this office imprisoned there
by proves the headquarters of this Army to have been at Tashkent on the date
of issue—24th November last.
•This is evidently a gross exaggeration. No Bolshevik unit approaches these dimensions.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
