1892-93.

ot the Military Works Department have been :
Abkdri godown with Inspector’s quarters on first floor at Steamer
Point.
Completion of entirely new lines of an improved style for the Native In
fantry Regiment stationed.
Line of piping connected these lines with the Seera condensers.

List of Cables and Lines laid, portant centre of telegraphic lines.
The following short statement of when the various lines have been laid
though extending beyond the decade, may be of some interest:—
The first telegraph line was laid between Aden and Bombay in March 1870
by the S.S. “ Great Eastern” and “Chiltern.”
The Suez No. 1 line was laid by the same vessels and the “ Hibernia ” and
“ William Cory ” in March 1870.
The Suez No. 2 line was laid in December 1876.
Bombay No. 2 line was laid in March 1877.
Zanzibar line in December 1879.

394. Changes and improvements of most importance seem to have been
Mail Lines. inaugurated from the year 1886, in which year
mails began to be received and despatched by the
Nord Deutschen Lloyd Packet Steamers.
It will be of interest to detail the places now served by this line and thus
illustrate the information of the innovation :—

Suez No. 3 line in April 1883.
Suez No. 1 line taken to Suakin in January 1884 and to Perim in October
1884.
The Assab and Massowa lines (from Perim) were laid in March 1887.
The line to Obokh (from Perim) in July 1889.
The line to Shaik Saeed (from Perim) in July 1890.
Bombay No. 3 line in April 1891.
With the exception of the Assab, Massowa, Obokh and Shaikh Saeed lines,
all the cables were laid by the ships belonging to the Eastern Telegraph Con
struction and Maintenance Company.
The Perim Coal Company ceded two plots of land in Perim to the Eastern
Telegraph Company in 1878-79, for residences, offices, cable-house, &c.
Telephone—
A Telephone Exchange was opened in Aden on 4th March 1891.
