395. In 1888 the Messageries Maritimes Company modified their Australian
line programme and opened up a new line, their vessels calling at Port Said,
Suez, Obokh, Aden, Zanzibar, and the island of Reunion. These vessels were
treated as mail packets, and thus the public obtained the benefit of a bi-monthly
communication with Zanzibar, Mauritius and Bdunion.
396. In the same year the Director General gave permission to the Aden
Post Office to fopyard local correspondence for the United Kingdom by the
Messageries Maritimes line. Previously correspondence had been forwarded
exclusively by the Peninsular and Oriental Company.
397 It was in 1888 that Her Majesty’s Post Master General curtailed the
stay of Peninsular and Oriental packets from 6 to 3 hours : but the Company
subsequently changed their programme and decided on a transhipment of mails
