The climate was decidedly more healthy than it

The average temperature was, as usual, considerably higher at the Crater
than at Steamer Point during the hot weather

danger connected with it, lies in its distribution and

Barracks,
The hospital accommodation has been so frequently condemned that it is
unnecessary for me to do so again, more especially as
Hospitals. the building of the new Station Hospital at Steamer
Point is steadily progressing, and it is believed that it will be ready for the
reception of patients by the end of this year.
The sanitary condition of the barracks and their surroundings have been
satisfactory, and the cook-houses, latrines, urinals,
Sanitation. ablution rooms have, on the whole, been kept clean
and in good order.
The average number constantly sick was 69’35, giving a percentage of 6*75,
and thus the general health has been fair. There
Heal tk of Troops. were 1,276 admissions as against 1,448 tke previous
year.
Eight deaths occurred during the year, one of these being out of hospital.
Of those in hospital, six took place at Steamer Point,
01 ta ^ ‘ and only one at the Crater—an unusually small number
for the latter place.
The deaths arose from the following causes
Enteric fever
Heat apoplexy
Fracture of the base of skull
Cirrhosis of liver ...
Measles
Remittent fever ...
Dislocation of spine ... ... ... 1 (out of hospital 5)
Five officers and 43 non-commissioned officers
and men were invalided ; of the former tw r o belonged
to the Army Medical Staff.
Thiee admissions, one of which ended fatally from hyperpyrexia. Gunner J.
Measles. Hogan, 3 S. D., Royal Artillery, was admitted on
the 19th September with well-defined measles, and
appeal ed to be progressing satisfactorily until the afternoon of the 22nd Septem-
er, when his temperature rose suddenly to 109°, shortly afterwards rising still
uit ei 110 4 ; at this time there was profound insensibility, the pupils
were contracted, and the corneal reflex was absent. Douching, ice, &c., reduced

to 195-4 , and he died on the morning of the 23rd September.
At the 'post-mortem examination the skin was noted to be disquamating, the

Dysentery.
Accounted for 25 admissions, two of which were
invalided. The rest recovered.
