There were 267 admissions—a great improvement on the previous year
when there were 410. Four men were invalided with
Malarial Severs. malarial cachexia. There was one death from re
mittent fever. The case was accompanied by severe vomiting and diarrhoea
and there was great prostration which ended in syncope.
By far the greatest change for the better is, however, to be noted in this
disease, there being only 5 admissions as against

Gonorrhoea and primary and secondary syphilis accounted for 328 admis
sions, and ulcer of penis for 93, making a total of 416
Venereal Diseases. compared with 343 in 1895 ; but this increase can be
accounted for by the arrival of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the 28th
October and the 13 E. D. Royal Artillery on the 17th December, both corps
bringing with them a large amount of venereal disease.
Alcoholism.
11 cases and 1 delirium tremens. All recovered.

21 admissions, one being invalided.

Gunner H. Douglas, 9 S. D. Royal Artillery, was attacked by Somali
coolies A term used to describe labourers from a number of Asian countries, now considered derogatory. on the night of the 3rd September, and died the following morning.
Extensive fractures of the skull, evidently caused by a heavy stick, were found
at the post-mortem examination.
Private J. Bayley, 1st Worcester Regiment, was found dead at the foot^of
Church Hill on the morning of the 9th August, his head being under him. The
verdict of the inguest was that “ he met his death by an accident due probably
to three causes, viz., haste, the darkness of the night, and more or less intoxica
tion.”
The post-mortem examination showed well-marked dislocation forwards of
the atlas and axis on the 3rd cervical vertebra.
One man was invalided owing to severe intracapsular fracture of the neck
of right femur.
Three patients were invalided with tubercle of
lung: one of these remained in hospital fiom the
previous year.
11 admissions ; of these two were for valvular
disease of heart and were invalided to England.
There were only 15 cases compared with 44 the
previous year, and all made good recoveries.
There were 118 admissions, of which 21 were from
dyspepsia and 36 from congestion of liver; one ot
the latter was invalided. There were 4 caseb m
hernia, 3 being invalided. .
Four admissions; of these one of Bright sDisease
was invalided.
Only 3 admissions as compared with 9 the pre-
vious year; of these one ended fatally and it occurred
at the Crater.
1'here were 4 cases at Steamer Point, but none at the tvnhoid
Erl • P 4 died, and the post-mortem revealed typical typhoid
