6 . Appendix V shows the strength and cost of the Land Police Force
L»na Police. The total number of officers and men amounted to

Mounted Police ; of these only 64 could read and write. The expenditure on
the force was Es. 1,20,628, of which Es. 79,636 was borne by Government
Es. 26,022 by the Aden Settlement and Es._ 14,970 by the Port Trust. The
whole of the cost of the Sheikh Othman Police, which amounted this vear to
24,862, falls on the Aden Settlement Eevenues.
7. Two hundred and five persons concerned in 175 offences were sent up
, .p the Police for trial, of whom 161 were convicted
br ^ ^ ^ 44 discharged. The percentage of convictions
was 78 54 as compared with 75T2 in the preceding
year. The value of property stolen during the year amounted to Es. 11,769.
of which Es. 6,380 was recovered, the percentage of recoveries being 54-21
against 49 in the preceding year.
8 . The conduct of the Police in general was fair. Seven were dismiss-

extra drill, 4 were severely reprimanded and 2 were
fined.

The strength of the Harbour Police consisted of 4 Inspectors, 1 clerk,
Harbour Police. ^ ama dar, 3 Head Constables, First Class, 4 Head
Constables, Second Class, 10 Constables, First Class,
15 Constables, Second Class, and 24 Constables, Third Class, half of the cost of
which is met by Government and half by the Aden Port Trust.
10. One hundred and thirteen persons were deported by sea to Somali-
land^and 53 to the interior of Arabia at the expense
of the Settlement.

11. The administration of criminal justice is vested in the Court of the
Criminal justice. Eesident by Bombay Act II of 1864. The Political
Eesident is the Sessions Judge. He hears. appeals
from the decisions of his Assistants and has power of revision in cases tried by
them. The other officers invested with criminal jurisdiction are :—
