Enclosure No- 5.
No. 12B, dated Pesbawur, the 8th October 1871.
Fiom D. C. Macnabb, Esq., OfFg. Commr. and Supdt., Peshawur Division.
To—The Secretary to the Government of India, Foreign Department, Simla.
the 2nd B OctobeT 1871, inclusite. 11 ° f Cabul Diary fr0m the 29th Se P tember to
Cabul Diary from the 29th September to the 2nd October 1871, inclusive.
The day before yesterday, Cabul officials discussed in a private apartment
# Full younger brother of the Ameer. re garding Sirdar Mahomed Shureef Khan* and
. . _ _ three sons of the late Sirdar Mahomed Azim
Khan being deported to the British territory or being kept under surveil
lance, and with a^ view to freeing the Cabul Government from the anxiety
always felt on their account. After a long discussion it w 7 as resolved that the
sons of Mahomed Azim Khan should not be deported at present, but, as Sirdar
Mahomed Shureef Khan desires to go to Mecca, he should be permitted to go
to that place, and not discouraged by being deported from Cabul; but the
British Government should be secretly solicited to keep him under surveillance
as soon as he enters their kingdom, in order that he may not be able to stir up
disturbances in future in Afghanistan. They further proposed that the three
sons of Mahomed Azim Khan should be deported when a suitable opportunity
occurs, and Sirdar Mahomed TJslum Khan, Sirdar Mahomed Hussein Khan,
and Sirdar Mahomed Kasim Khan (all three brothers), should be imprisoned for
life in Afghanistan.
Sirdar Shere Ali Khan, Governor of Candahar, has reported to the Ameer
* Knows the English language. tba ? Mi /f , Sh ?°-i a Khan,* who was formerly employ-
ed m Afghanistan, has arrived at Candahar, and
stated that the British Government have deputed him to bring information
regarding Meshed and other places, and that he is leaving for Meshed. The
Ameer has written to the Sirdar that, as this man has been deputed by the British
Government to collect news, he is at liberty to go to any direction he may wash.
The chiefs and other people of Toorkistan have sent a petition to the
Ameer complaining about their sufferings from the drought of the season and
famine, and stating that they would be entirely ruined unless some remission
were made in their land revenue. Though no reply has yet been given, it
appears that no attention w 7 ill be paid to their petition, because similar distress
is prevalent in Cabul, Candahar, and Herat Provinces, and great loss has conse
quently been sustained in Government revenue, while the expenses of the
army have not in any w 7 ay decreased. Owing to the income being less than the
expenditure, the Cabul authorities feel anxiety.
The Ameer has sent a message to the Agent that, during His Highness’s
# a Councillor of the Cabul Govern- sojourn at Ambala, a Syud, Noor Mahomed Shah,*
ment. represented to the British officials that, as Maho-
t British news writer at Candahar. med Anwurf writes false news, the Cabul Durbar
does not like his residence at Candahar, but, as he has not been transferred as
yet, it is desired that some other man may be appointed in his place.
