This volume contains parts 4 and 5 of the subject 'Persia Gulf'. It documents the efforts of British officials to persuade both Bin Saud [‘Abd al-‘Azīz bin ‘Abd al-Raḥmān bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd] and the Grand Sherif [Sharif] of Mecca [Ḥusayn bin ‘Alī al-Hāshimī] to side with the British against the Ottomans in the First World War. It includes correspondence, not only between Government of India, India Office The department of the British Government to which the Government of India reported between 1858 and 1947. The successor to the Court of Directors. , and Foreign Office correspondents, but also between British officials and Arab rulers, including Bin Saud and the Grand Sherif. Also included in the volume is a copy of a draft of a preliminary treaty between the British government and Bin Saud, plus a copy of a completed treaty and a copy of the ratified treaty.

Both parts include a divider that gives the subject and part numbers, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained in that part by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the rear to the front of the volume.

The subject 2182 (Persia Gulf) consists of 8 volumes: IOR/L/PS/10/384-391. The volumes are divided into 12 parts with part 1 comprising the first volume, part 2 comprising the second volume, part 3 comprising the third volume, parts 4-5 comprising the fourth volume, part 6 comprising the fifth volume, parts 7-8 comprising the sixth volume, parts 9-10 comprising the seventh volume, and parts 11-12 comprising the eighth volume.

Physical characteristics

Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 368; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto The front of a sheet of paper or leaf, often abbreviated to 'r'. side of each folio. An additional foliation sequence is present in parallel between ff 3-366; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled.
